Chinese Zodiac Predictions for 2020 - Year of the Yang Metal Rat

What happened in 2020? This article was published in 2019 and examines the Chi energy of the Yang Metal Rat year, going into worldwide predictions as well as each of the Chinese Astrology Animal Zodiac signs.

Get ready for the thrills and excitement of the Yang Metal Rat year. For some it will be a gentle merry-go-round, for others a roller coaster, and for some, the house of horrors.

The theme of 2020 is an odd mix of justice (sometimes swift and painful) and breaking free of discipline, whether that is external authority or self-control.

Yang Metal is a simple piece of ore until it is refined to become the sword or the axe, meaning that this Element can undergo tough times and become something of a Robin Hood. It creates and supports the Rat’s Water Element, but the Hidden Stem in the Rat is Yin Water, which is Yang Metal’s “Hurting Officer”. This is the rebellious child, the show-off; thinking only in the now, not for the future. The image here is of a kindly but stern parent tolerating an unruly child.

The Rat is strong with Metal to support it. It is one of the four Cardinal Branches, and one of the four Peach Blossoms, a savvy networker, charming, adaptable and inventive. The last Rat year was in 2008, the Yang Earth Rat, known as “Lightning Fire” in the system of Na Yin. Rapid changes occurred in the markets that Water had power over leading to the Global Financial Crisis. The Na Yin Element for 2020’s Rat is “Wall Earth”, indicating that even though the Rat’s Water Element is stronger, any changes can lead to the safety and sustenance of more people world-wide.

Going back to the theme park analogy, those that act with discretion and ensure they are living within their means will be on a gentle ride. If you waver between frugal and extravagant, or have done so in the past couple of years, you’ll be on the roller coaster. If you like to show-off and spend whatever you earn, or invest in risky deals then the house of horrors is most likely.

Despite world financial issues, the last Rat year in 2008 saw plenty of positive change, and we can expect the same in 2020. Changes in leadership around the world to more humanitarian governments and advances in science and technology. Since Water Qi is very strong, there will be weather systems that create floods in low lying areas, perhaps tsunami’s, avalanches and other water-based disasters. On a domestic level, get your plumbing and electrical systems checked over by a qualified tradesman to head off problems down the track.

From a Chinese Medicine perspective, the kidneys are mostly affected leading to fear-based stress. The mainstream media will have a lot of influence over the population if they use fear to sell stories and gain ratings. When this Qi is directed in a positive way, it can become resourcefulness and confidence. This excessive Water Qi can have a negative effect on fertility and depending on your entire Four Pillars chart can lead to liver and heart problems.

The best advice for everyone this year is to minimise financial exposure and focus on house and home. Make a safe, serene place for yourself that you can build on in years to come.

Here is a look at all of the Year Branches, or Animal Signs of the Chinese Zodiac, and how the Yang Metal Rat will affect each –

If you are the sign of the Rat it is your year, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s going to be fantastic. When you arrive into your own sign, it’s a time to look within yourself, work out who you truly are and make the changes you need to improve your future. It can also mean shifts in career and living arrangements, usually positive but only when care is taken. It is a good idea to ‘cultivate karma’ by making donations or volunteering.

Love and Personal Life
Rats health will continue to be good, especially if steps are taken to maintain it. Any strained relationships with siblings should start to improve by the end of the year, but it will take effort on your part to create stronger bonds. Since it is your year, it is time to ask yourself what you want from a relationship, decide on who is best suited to share your life’s journey.

Career and Money
Work and money is fairly average for Rats this year, where income matches outgoings. Being a person with a degree of street smarts, Rats may be able to take advantage of any drops in markets like property and buy at lower than current prices. This will only work if the canny Rat has been able to set aside a decent amount of capital in the last few years. If you haven’t been careful, then get into a routine for work and some frugal (-ish) living.

You’re a Rat if you were born in 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996 or 2008.

The Ox is an Earth sign and is a “Six Harmony” combination with the Rat, acting as a helper and smoothing things over in 2020. The Rat and Ox appearing together are special for those born with a Yang Wood, Yang Earth or Yang Metal Day Master. If you have the Ox on your year, month or hour 2020 will be a great year in most areas of life, however pick one goal to follow and the universe will help you achieve it.

Love and Personal Life
Oxen will find themselves doing especially well in love and romance however if you have children it is a year that brings very little affinity. This could be due to having to work harder, and having less time to spend with family. Basically, singles will have a more enjoyable year than Oxen with family.

Career and Money
The Justice star for the Ox is strong, with career a little above average in the Rat year, so there should be rewards for working hard and applying yourself, with an increase in responsibility and authority. If you read this article in 2019, then continue with your savings plan (or start one) and make sure to get advice on investments before jumping in.

You’re an Ox if you were born in 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997 or 2009.

The Tiger is Wood Element with a bit of Fire thrown in for good measure, whereas the Rat is all Water. This means that even with Wood Element, the Tiger may find that their Fire creates stagnation in some areas of their life.

Love and Personal Life
The Tiger’s Hidden Wood indicates that love and romance remain positive, but family and friends will still remain high on your list of priorities. You are starting to feel good about yourself Tiger, make sure you share that inner confidence with those around you.

Career and Money
Tiger will feel that there are blocks to career progress and income in 2020, and for the most part this will be true. It is a good idea to stay completely professional at work, and make sure that any great ideas you have are attributed to you. You’ll make some gains this year, but also some losses.

You’re a Tiger if you were born in 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998 or 2010.

The Rabbit and Rat aren’t really friends, even though the Rat’s Water supports the Rabbit’s Wood, and they are both Cardinal and Peach Blossom Branches. These two together are called the “penalty of impertinence”, and can mean that Bunnies need to be very careful of what they say and do in 2020, as they’ll find it easy to offend others.

Love and Personal Life
Love and romance are looking very good for Rabbit’s, but most will have only one thing on their mind, and that involves making more bunnies. Since there is a penalty with the Rat, and both are Peach Blossom romance stars, there is a chance that some Rabbits will find themselves involved in sex scandals this year. From a health perspective, take care when working at heights and around water.

Career and Money
Wealth is at the lowest ebb for Rabbits in 2020 but your career and employment prospects are improving. If you are at a good workplace, you are best to maintain the status quo and work diligently to keep your place. If you are having problems with co-workers or management, it may be time to cut your losses and move onto greener pastures.

You’re a Rabbit if you were born in 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999 or 2011.

The Dragon and Rat are a half “Three Harmony” Water combination, so if your Four Pillars chart likes Water, then 2020 will be a smooth and prosperous year. Most Dragons will find that even if trouble makes an appearance, it will smooth over fairly quickly.

Love and Personal Life
Dragons love life is so-so, the energy is more supportive of Dragons in relationships going about their daily domestic life. Your ancestors (parents, grandparents) are or have been on your mind, so this is the time to enjoy their company and mend fences if you need to.

Career and Money
The property star is not very good for Dragons in 2020, so if there is a drop in the market, Dragons will likely be the losers in the short-term though the combination with the Rat will help to ensure that any problems are short-lived. Take a long-term view and make the move towards stability and establishing a home base.

You’re a Dragon if you were born in 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000 or 2012.

The Snake is 2020’s “Good Virtue” which means that you are one of this year’s helper signs. After the disruptive clash with the Pig in 2019 you may feel that you need some good karma, and by helping others now, you’ll be helping yourself later.

Love and Personal Life
Snakes will get their best luck through their personal appearance and sense of style, and even though there will be days you won’t feel like it, it will be worth the effort. Snakes will find that they have a weaker immune system in 2020, so eat as well as you can and take those supplements. You have a good opportunity to shine and make connections this year.

Career and Money
Snakes have hidden Yang Metal which can be helpful for generating money this year. In fact, all wealth stars are on the rise again after a period of stagnation, however the strongest is the Snake’s work star, which means this year is best for focussing on doing the activities that lead to income generation.

You’re a Snake if you were born in 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001 or 2013.

The Horse is Fire Element, and the Rat is Water, creating a clash simply called “unstable life”. The Year Pillar in a Four Pillars chart represents, in part, your residence and how other people see you, so you can expect to move residence or change jobs this year, either by choice or by circumstance. If you take the initiative and start assessing your situation early on, the clash with the Rat can become very positive. If you dither about and wait for events to overtake you, then you may find yourself in trouble. Horses born in 1954, 1966 and 2014 are most affected, so your focus needs to be on creating stability and a financial safety net would be advantageous in 2020.

Love and Personal Life

From a relationship’s perspective, the most uplifting connections for Horses this year will involve immediate family of the same generation or younger – brothers, sisters, children, cousins. The Horse is the Stem Yang Metal’s “Peach Blossom” or romance star, but with the Rat’s clash, it is most likely that any new romance will end poorly.

If you have the Horse on your Day Pillar on your full Four Pillars chart, then spend the year taking extra special care of your spouse. Also make sure to look after your health and, if you can, consider donating blood. If you can’t donate blood directly, then financial donations to charities such as the Red Cross or Heart Foundation will be helpful as the Horse’s Fire governs the heart and circulatory system.

Career and Money
Despite the clashing, career and money aren’t as badly affected as one would think. Horses will have to put in the effort to keep their finances moving though, but it isn’t all bad news. Once again, focus on stability and routine.

You’re a Horse if you were born in 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002 or 2014.

The Sheep is Earth Element but contains hidden Wood and Fire, so is against the Water flow of Chi in 2020. Since the Rat clashes with the Horse, and the Sheep and Horse are close friends, then the Sheep is “guilty by association” and is harmed by the Rat, which means small roadblocks and frustrations for the year. The Sheep is also one of Yang Metal’s helper stars, so you may find that people will look to you for assistance.

Love and Personal Life
Children will bring the most joy for Sheep in 2020, or if you don’t have children, then being around younger people will be very beneficial. Love and romance are on the decline, and combined with the helper star and the harm energy, any new relationship may find you being the one who makes all the effort. Continue working on your health, as it will steadily improve throughout 2020.

Career and Money
Work and career are very well aspected for the Sheep in 2020, especially if you work in a consulting or service industry, as being Yang Metal’s helper star indicates that people will seek you out. Like the Horse, make stability your goal this year, and try to avoid drama or risky ventures.

You’re a Sheep if you were born in 1944, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003 or 2015.

The Monkey is the other half “Three Harmony” combination with the Rat (along with the Dragon), so you can expect a fairly smooth year ahead, even if the Water Element produced isn’t great for your main Four Pillars chart. If Water is your full chart’s favourite Element, then 2020 will be an outstanding year.

Love and Personal Life
Monkeys will feel closer to their children (and grandchildren) in 2020, and they will play a major role in your happiness. Your health and inner strength is growing after all the knocks and bumps you’ve endured, especially in your love life. After this year, your luck in love will start improving.

Career and Money
Your career star indicates that there will be plenty of work. Wealth shines on Monkeys as well in 2020, so you should start getting paid what you’re worth. If you aren’t being fairly compensated for your skills, it may be time to look for a work place that will appreciate you. You may find yourself in a better job, city or home.

You’re a Monkey if you were born in 1945, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992 or 2004.

The Rooster should have another stable year, and just like 2019, there really shouldn’t be any major changes or shifts in your life. In fact, several issues that you have been worried about over the last few years should resolve themselves this year.

Love and Personal Life
Roosters are the only Peach Blossom Branch that is usable with the Rat in 2020, so you should have a very good year in relationships of all kinds. The Rooster’s hidden Stem is Yin Metal, competitor to Yang Metal Stem of the year, so there may be issues with peers in the workplace. Overall though, it will be a nice year for friends and family and your health will continue to improve.

Career and Money
Wealth is headed the Roosters way in 2020, and since the Rat is very well aspected for relationships, much of your good financial luck will come through your network and business dealings. Your property star is nearing it’s peak as well, so it may pay to look at tangible investments like real estate, precious metals, commodities or collectibles.

You’re a Rooster if you were born in 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993 or 2005.

The Dog and Rat aren’t particularly good friends, as the Dog’s Earth controls the Rat’s Water. The hidden Yin Fire in the Dog also clashes with the Rat’s hidden Yin Water. This means an up and down year for most Dog’s.

Love and Personal Life
The Rat will be a year of melodramatic relationships for all Dogs, some of it self-inflicted, some of it not. Avoid being dragged into these situations particularly with parents and siblings, and it will pay in the long run for you to take the high road. Some of your loyalties will be tested as well, which Dogs find particularly difficult being the most loyal of all the signs. It is a good habit for you to analyse the balance in your relationships and work out if you are just being loyal for the sake of it.

Career and Money
Your best luck this year comes through movement, travel and meeting new people. Out of all the signs in 2020, the Dog is in the best position to take advantage of any market movement, whether it’s up or down, so keep your eyes open for opportunities. If you’ve been doing very well then make sure that your assets and wealth are protected, as the drama of 2020 can mean losing ground. Similarly, Dogs that have been doing poorly may find themselves suddenly in the spotlight.

You’re a Dog if you were born in 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994 or 2006.

The Pig and Rat have a good affinity with each other, but will only combine to form Water when the Ox is present (either elsewhere on your chart or during Ox months and days). Pigs have hidden Yang Wood that benefits from the Rat’s Water, so there will always be support for you in 2020.

Love and Personal Life
Even though your love (and sex) life is improving, if you make some extra effort in improving your appearance, then you will have much better luck with your current or prospective partner. Pigs will find it easy to stay at home and avoid the world, but risk becoming slovenly, not only affecting love life, but career as well. Your health is better than average in 2020 so get moving, do some exercise, improve your diet and cut down on all the naughty treats that Pigs love so much.

Career and Money
Pigs best luck comes through movement and travel, and you will have better than average luck when investing in tangible assets like real estate. Since Pigs generally think in terms of the now rather than planning for the future, many Pigs will benefit from an investment and retirement plan that will make the most of the good financial luck you are getting this year.

You’re a Pig if you were born in 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995 or 2007.

  1. There has always been a lot of external noise. I found this external noise very very depressing for a long while. I honestly wanted this to just pause or stop for a moment. Every time I tried to face those problems head on, all I wound up seeing was a mass of things I can’t control. It’s been a while coming, but I’ve finally began to enjoy the peace and ease from doing what I’m able to. For a while I tuned out the media and focused more on my internal environment. With consistent meditation, I was able to enter a level of ease that is independent of the things around me. I definitely should get the magazine for 2022.

  2. Wow, you really nailed it with this article! 2020 was simultaneously a roller coaster and house of horrors for sure. I really love the idea that a simple piece of ore goes through tough times in order to be refined into a sword or axe. I think we can all relate to that after the last couple of years!

  3. Love this article! And you were right, mainstream media did have a lot of influence over the population (and even the world) in 2020. But I think it’s a great reminder that we can only control what we do and how we as individuals react to things. Something I’ve personally been working on. Thank you for writing this!
